Exodus

Fanuel Leul

Ethiopia

In Exodus, Fanuel Girma captures a moment suspended between what was and what is yet to come. A sea of figures, adorned in vibrant patterns and ethereal masks, move in a chaotic yet synchronized rhythm – pushing, pulling, and swaying as if caught in a trance-like dance. At the centre, a winged figure rises above the entangled mass, embodying both escape and ascension. The deep purples and desert-like landscape set a dreamlike stage for this exploration of movement, identity, and transformation. Experience Exodus today and step into its layered vision of transformation.

About the artist

Fanuel Leul Girma is a versatile digital artist from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, whose work blends traditional African elements with futuristic aesthetics. With a degree in Industrial Design and a minor in Fine Art, he has spent nearly a decade exploring the concept of Afrofuturism, or as he describes it, “leaving souvenirs for the future.”

His portfolio spans paintings, animations, and multimedia pieces, all deeply rooted in Afrofuturism’s bold reimagination of African culture and heritage. Girma challenges stereotypes and celebrates Africa’s vibrant spirit, portraying it with a sense of joy, peace, and forward-thinking creativity.

As the founder of Studio Qedamawi, Girma launched the Bugnad comic book, further expanding his impact as both an artist and storyteller. He believes in the importance of exploring aesthetics beyond Ethiopia, drawing inspiration from diverse African cultures to create a fusion of tradition and innovation. He integrates ancient artefacts and narratives with futuristic technology, reimagining African stories in a new light. He aims to empower the next generation of African artists to embrace their creativity and shape the future of storytelling on the continent.
